What is the Canadian Internet Forum?
The Internet has become one of the most critical pieces of infrastructure of our time, underpinning Canada’s social and economic systems. However, Canadians have only had limited opportunities to engage in discussions about the how the Internet is developed and governed.
CIRA is mandated to give back to the Canadian Internet community. As a result, CIRAS is committed to create a venue for dialogue on the future of the Internet. We will share your thoughts with our government and industry partners, and present our findings to the United Nations co-ordinated Internet Governance Forum. This dialogue will also enhances CIRA’s work in the international arena, informing our participation in decisions that affect the development of the Internet globally.
The Canadian Internet Forum (CIF) provides a place for Canadians to discuss, debate and propose directions for the development, deployment and governance of the Internet in Canada. In 2012, the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) will host the CIF for the second time. In 2010-11, we hosted six face-to-face consultations in major Canadian centres. CIRA also facilitated an online discussion forum, and wrapped up the initiative with a national event where the findings from the consultations were presented and discussed.
A report on the findings, available here [--link--], was released, distributed to key stakeholders and made available to all Canadians, and was presented at the United Nations coordinated Internet Governance Forum [--link--] in September 2011.
Similar to last year, the 2012 CIF will culminate in a national event in February 2012, a white paper of findings shared with CIRA’s partners and stakeholders, and will be presented at international fora.
